Football game is played on a rectangular pitch with an overall length of 120 yards (109.728 meters) and 53 and 1 / 3 yd (48.768 meters) in width. Boundary lines along the length of the pitch are called the side lines (sidelines), and along the width – end lines (end lines). Parallel to the final 10 yards into the field, run two lines point (goal lines). On both sides of the pitch between the lines end and point fields are defined point (end zones).

Across the field, localized between the lines, lines are painted in yards (yard lines) 5 yards apart. Every 10 yards of these lines are numbered so as to indicate the distance to the nearest score line. The center of the pitch crosses the line of 50 yards. On the pitch there are two rows of dotted lines – called internal lines (inbound lines) or dashed (hash marks) – parallel to the sidelines. The lines of internal lines are placed every 1 yard, and used to accurately determine the location of scrimmage.

At the end of each line end are two pillars (Goalposts, uprights) spaced 18.5 feet (5.54736 m) apart. Columns connect the lower bar suspended 10 feet (3,048 meters) above the ground. Both teams can draw 11 players. Each player can exchange any number of times, if time permits in the intervals between actions. This makes almost all of the 46 active athletes exposed to a particular game have a chance to play in it. Players tend to specialize in certain parts of the game and if necessary may be employed in one of three formations: attack, defense or special formations.
